“The most dangerous thing a leader can do is mistake silence for peace.”
Darryl S. Diggs, Jr. has spent 30+ years in St. Louis building, leading, and challenging organizations to do better. From the classroom to the boardroom, from the mediation table to the keynote stage, the work has always been the same: create the conditions for honest conversation, and watch what becomes possible.
From the classroom to the C-suite.
The arc of Dr. Diggs’ leadership career traces the full K–12 ladder: science teacher, assistant principal at Parkway South High School, principal at Hardin Middle School, and now Executive Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility at the Special School District of St. Louis County, where his work spans 22 partner districts and 265 schools.
Along the way he earned an Ed.D., completed the AASA Aspiring Superintendent Academy and a Harvard Certificate in School Management and Leadership, and built a reputation as someone who can walk into the most difficult room in a building and find a way forward.
He also teaches as an adjunct professor at Saint Louis University and serves on the board of SHRM Greater St. Louis, because he believes in developing the next generation of people who ask the hard questions.
Why he built Diggs at the Table.
Every organization has the conversations it keeps not having. The ones where someone needs to say something true and nobody does. The conflict that gets managed into silence instead of resolved into understanding. The leader who’s been benched and doesn’t know if they’re being prepared or discarded.
Someone has to be willing to pull up a chair and go there. Diggs at the Table was built to be that presence: as a mediator, a coach, a consultant, and a speaker who doesn’t deliver comfortable presentations to rooms that need disruption.
The frameworks he’s developed over two decades of real organizational work (OCEANS, C.I.V.I.L., R.I.S.E., the Redshirted Leader) aren’t theoretical. They came from the field. And they work because they were built there.
What 140.6 miles teaches you about leadership.
Dr. Diggs is a two-time Ironman finisher, with two Did Not Finish moments before he crossed the line at Louisville. That’s not a footnote. That’s the whole story.
The willingness to show up again after not finishing. The discipline to train when nobody’s watching. The clarity that comes at mile 20 of a marathon at the end of a 140.6-mile day. These aren’t metaphors he borrowed. They’re things he lived, and they show up in every workshop, every mediation, and every keynote he delivers.
Endurance isn’t about not struggling. It’s about knowing what you’re training for when you are.
Purpose before bureaucracy. Always.
The title of his first book, The Fire Within: When Purpose Meets Bureaucracy, captures the tension he’s navigated his entire career: the clash between what you know needs to happen and the systems that slow it down, quiet it down, or push it out entirely.
That fire is the reason Diggs at the Table exists. Not as a side project. As a calling.
Built from the field. Tested in real organizations.
